If you feel hungry soon after breakfast, you’re definitely not alone. It’s one of the most common things I hear from clients, and more often than not, it has very little to do with willpower and a lot to do with what’s actually on your plate.
The Problem with Typical Breakfasts
A lot of typical breakfast options are quite carbohydrate heavy. Think cereal, toast, fruit, or even something like a smoothie. There’s nothing inherently wrong with these foods, but when they’re eaten on their own, they tend to digest quickly and don’t keep you satisfied for very long. This often leads to that mid morning slump where you’re reaching for snacks, coffee or something sweet just to get through till lunch.
What’s Missing from Your Plate?
What is usually missing is enough protein, and often healthy fats. These are the nutrients that help slow digestion, keep you full, and support more stable energy levels throughout the morning.
If breakfast is just toast with jam, your body will process that quickly. Compare that to toast with eggs or cottage cheese. No major changes, subtle tweaks. When you add protein, suddenly that same meal becomes much more satisfying and sustaining.
Easy Ways to Upgrade Your Breakfast
The goal isn’t to overhaul your breakfast, just make small, practical upgrades. If you enjoy cereal, keep it, but add Greek yoghurt or a scoop of protein powder, either mixed through or on the side. If you like fruit, pair it with yoghurt or some nuts rather than having it on its own. Even something as simple as increasing the yoghurt in your bowl can make a noticeable difference. Options like yoghurt with chia and a small amount of nut butter, eggs on toast, or overnight oats with added protein don’t take much more time, but will keep you fuller and more energised.
How Breakfast Impacts the Rest of Your Day
This also tends to have a flow-on effect later in the day. When breakfast is low in protein and doesn’t keep you full, it often sets up a pattern of chasing hunger, more snacks, bigger portions at lunch, and those strong afternoon cravings where you feel like you need something sweet or quick for energy. The dreaded 4pm, you know what I am talking about.
Front loading your day a little more, particularly with protein, can help take the edge off those afternoon cravings. You’re not getting to 3pm or 4pm feeling depleted, which makes it much easier to make more balanced choices without feeling like you’re relying on willpower.
Progress Over Perfection
You don’t need to aim for perfection here. Even a small increase in protein at breakfast can have a noticeable impact, not just in the morning, but across the whole day.
If you’re finding yourself constantly hungry mid-morning or battling afternoon cravings, it’s probably not that you need more food, it’s that your breakfast might just need a bit more balance. After all, it is the most important meal of the day.
