When you’re starting a new health journey, whether it’s a new diet, exercise plan, or overall lifestyle change, it can feel overwhelming. You’re motivated, but staying on track can be challenging without the right support. That’s where regular and consistent follow-ups come into play, especially in the early stages.
The Power of Regular Monitoring
A recent study (1) explored how people manage to stick with dietary changes and maintain their progress over time. The participants in this study emphasised something crucial: regular reviews and monitoring made all the difference in helping them stay committed. These check-ins provided them with feedback that not only kept them accountable but also helped them build confidence in their ability to succeed. This process, known as self-efficacy, is key to making long-term changes. When you feel like you’re truly in control and capable, you’re more likely to keep going.
But it’s not just about feeling good; it’s about turning that motivation into lasting habits. The study found that as people began to see results and received positive feedback, they started to internalise their motivation. This means that their initial external reasons for starting the diet—like wanting to lose weight—became part of their own identity and values. They weren’t just following a plan; they were making it a part of who they are. And that concept sounded SO similar to my favourite chapter in Atomic Habits, the chapter I come back to time and time again, the one about aligning your daily habits with your identity and values. Brilliant!
Guidelines Support Frequent Follow-Ups
Keep in mind, this isn’t just something I am writing about to keep you coming back. Regular reviews are one of the cornerstones of our core practice guidelines. The National Health and Medical Research Council’s Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Overweight and Obesity in Australia (2) recommend regular (fortnightly) check-ins for the first three months of a health intervention. These frequent visits allow us to track your progress closely, catch any early signs of trouble, and adjust your plan as needed to keep you on track.
Why We Encourage Frequent Bookings
At our clinic, we encourage frequent bookings, especially in the early stages of your health journey, because we know it works. Regular follow-ups give us a chance to support you, keep you motivated, and make sure you’re progressing as expected. It’s not just about checking off appointments; it’s about giving you the best possible chance of success.
We want you to know that these follow-ups are a crucial part of your journey to better health. They’re about building habits, staying accountable, and ultimately, helping you feel empowered to take control of your health for the long term. Often forward booking a few appointments is also a great idea as it means you have the timeslot saved that works best within your day.
So, when we suggest booking regular appointments, it’s because we’re committed to helping you achieve your goals, one step at a time.
