WHEN IN DOUBT, SWIM!

Blog

At Canberra Allied Health we are all about finding exercise that you enjoy!

So many of our clients are slogging it out at a gym they don’t particularly like or continue to try and walk (and walk and walk) when all it does is make their knees ache. We don’t agree with the mentality that exercise is a chore or something to dread. Enjoyment is the only way that an exercise is going to become a sustainable part of your weekly routine! You want to look forward to going, have fun while doing it and leave feeling better than when you arrived. It is also important to find a form of exercise that is suitable for your body, including all of those pesky injuries, aches and pains. And here is where the pool comes in – it is suitable for just about everyone! Pool based exercise, whether that be swimming, walking laps or doing aqua-aerobics or hydrotherapy, is a brilliant form of movement. It increases your cardio-respiratory fitness, improves flexibility, improves upper and lower body strength and is brilliant for mental health. For those who suffer from chronic disease, overweight or injuries, you are often able to do so much more exercise in water than you would have been able to do on land, all without exacerbating pain or injury. That is because exercising in the non-weight bearing environment of water minimises impact forces on the joints. Pool based exercise has also been shown to increase your sense of wellbeing and help you cope with life’s stressors. If you haven’t been in the water for a long time or are feeling apprehensive about giving it a go, we promise a supportive and non-judgemental environment to start you off. Our experienced exercise physiologists are accredited with Exercise and Sports Science Australia and specialise in exercise for people with chronic disease, injury and illness. We offer a number of pool-based options, suitable for every age and ability.

Kathy Devonshire-Gill is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist and a Masters Swimming Coach with over 45 years of experience teaching in the pool. She offers individual hydrotherapy and learn to swim sessions (from novice to elite) as well as aqua-aerobics classes and lap swimming groups.

Aaron Greenup is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist who has blended seamlessly into our team and runs our Wednesday evening aqua-aerobics classes.

Emily Lewis is the founder of Canberra Allied Health and subs into the aqua-classes from time to time. She loves the water and is always impressed to see the progress of our regular pool goers.

What are the details and how can I sign up?!

We are currently based at Lakeside Leisure Centre in Greenway. The pool is warm and has ramp and stair access for those who don’t want to use a ladder.

As of August 2022, we have two aqua-aerobics classes running each week, one on Wednesday evening 6:30pm – 7:30pm and the other Saturday afternoon 3:00pm – 4:00pm. These classes are $25 or $220 for a 10 pack.

Kathy offers individual pool-based exercise at a number of times throughout the week, get in touch and we will do our best to find a time that suits you.

Our small lap swimming group is held on a Wednesday at 11am.

Please get in touch with us if you would like more information about our pool offerings and to sign up. You can email us on admin@canberraalliedhealth.com or call Emily on 0402 554 987.

We look forward to seeing you in the water soon!
