1. Opt For Warm, Balanced Meals Over Restriction
Craving hearty food in winter is completely normal. Instead of cutting it out, I like to think about what you can add to make it more nourishing.
Try this:
- Adding tinned lentils or beans to your soups or slow cooked dishes. This packs in extra micronutrients, fibre and protein.
- Include some leafy greens or roasted veggies with pasta or curries. This is a strategic way to ensure you don’t forget about the fibre!
- Use whole grains like brown rice, barley or quinoa for longer lasting energy.
2. Keep a Routine, But Do It Gently
- Eating regular meals to avoid energy dips or sugar cravings.
- Having a warm, protein-rich breakfast to start your day. This could be a high protein yoghurt with warmed frozen berries or stewed fruit. It might also be eggs or a frittata with an assortment of different veggies.
- Prepping a few healthy options for busy nights to help combat stress and poor decision making.
3. Move Your Body in Ways That Feel Good
You definitely do not need to run Lake Burley Griffin in the Canberra cold, unless you want to of course. A 10-minute walk after lunch or gentle stretching at home can help boost your mood, support digestion, and help balance energy levels.
Movement doesn’t have to be super intense, it just has to feel doable.
4. Give Yourself Permission to Rest
Winter naturally invites us to slow down and that’s not a bad thing. Rest, good sleep, and downtime are essential for both physical and mental health. Listen to what your body needs and allow space for recovery. Use this time strategy to decompress and spend time with friends and family.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need to be perfect this winter, just intentional. Small, consistent habits can make a big difference in how you feel.
